Candy maker opens R&D facility at Goose Island to create 'brilliant snacks'

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Mars Snacking has opened what it calls its Global Research and Development hub on Chicago’s Goose Island.

The candy maker invested $42 million in the 44,000-square foot facility, which will focus on foods with chocolate and nuts. Company officials cut the proverbial ribbon on Thursday.

“We’ve got some brilliant ingredients and science spaces here on site, sustainability credential, everything we do on packaging. Which gives us the opportunity to design some brilliant snacks in the future,” said Andrew Clark, the company’s global president.

The new research and development facility at 1132 W.
Blackhawk St. is an expansion of the company’s footprint in Goose Island along the North Branch of the Chicago River. Previously the company said it would create 30 permanent jobs, bringing the total workforce there to 1,000 people.
