KANE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Kane County non-profit that trains people to watch over children in foster care is celebrating a new class of graduates and an even larger group of volunteers coming in.

Director of training and education Sandie Cross gives some of the credit to media attention last month for recruiting 25 people for the next session of Court Appointed Special Advocates.

She said they'll start learning at the end of the month how to monitor and report back to court how children who were abused or neglected are now doing in foster care.

On Tuesday afternoon, a group of 12 people will graduate from the eight-week program at the Kane County Courthouse to become CASA guardians ad litem.

Cross said putting information about the program online - beyond a specific virtual meeting - has opened up the opportunity for more people.

"We are more than likely going to have more than 20 participants in our upcoming class, which starts on September 28, so that's very exciting for us, because our need for volunteers is so great."

Despite that, she estimates they still need about 40 more volunteers. The new class is so big they will have two different weekly meeting times.
