BURR RIDGE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Sean Casten declared victory late in the evening after fending off Republican challenger Keith Pekau, the mayor of Orland Park.

“The work of rebuilding our country and restoring decency and trust of leading with love, none of that ends with tonight’s election. We should be proud of what you’ve done tonight, but now take that pride and build it into something bigger,” Casten told supporters.

Casten said this election season has been difficult since the unexpected death of his 17-year-old daughter Gwen this year.

“Last time I won an election, we did it in a drive-thru. The last time I did an election in a room this big, Gwen was here with us (chokes up). I have a picture on my desk of all us, set in that moment and there’s such a joy on her face, and it is so, it’s so hard not have her here,” Casten said.

The battle for the 6th Congressional District was seen as one of the key fronts in the battle for control of the House and drew nationwide attention.

Campaign appearances in recent days by President Joe Biden for Casten and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for Pekau, who told supporters late in the night that Illinois would continue to be under "one party rule."
