CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was a ribbon-cutting Wednesday in the South Chicago neighborhood, celebrating completion of the first phase of a streetscape project.

The ceremony was held at 92nd and Commercial Avenue, marking the completion of phase one of  a four-phase reconstruction.

For three blocks, there are new sidewalks and curbs, light poles, bike lanes, pavers, traffic signals and plaques celebrating the history and culture of South Chicago. This is in the 10th Ward.

“This project runs pretty deep for me,” Alderman Peter Chico said. “I grew up a couple of blocks away in our first family home on 85th and Exchange, and I remember Saturday mornings. It was a treat to go to Commercial Avenue, walk around, go to the stores, grab breakfast or lunch. And, those experiences I had with my parents and grandparents, we want those experiences I shared to be shared by families every single day.”

CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney said that’s part of the point: enhancing a walking corridor to support local businesses and strengthen the area’s economy.
