(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Shedd Aquarium has euthanized one of its sea lions after the animal was diagnosed with an untreatable infection.
The 600-pound California Sea Lion had a spinal infection, a diagnosis his handler called devastating.
Biff, as he was known, could balance a soccer ball on his nose, dance and enjoyed being petted. But his handlers noticed something was off about Biff recently.
“He was humanely euthanized on Wednesday morning, surrounded by those who cared for him daily,” the Shedd said in a communication Friday.
Biff came to the Shedd 12 years ago from the wilds of Portland after he was caught more than once feasting on endangered salmon.
Staffers don’t know how old Biff was, but they estimate he was in his early- to mid-20s. The Shedd has three sea lions remaining, all males: Tanner, Cruz and Laguna.
