CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - You woke up this morning to icy conditions.

Evening and overnight freezing rain/drizzle left a glaze of ice on exposed vehicles and untreated surfaces throughout the Chicago area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the entire region Wednesday. That alert expired at 6 a.m., but, due to temps remaining below freezing, untreated surfaces will remained slick for much of the morning.

0.15 inches of ice was reported at O’Hare Airport and 0.14 inches at Midway Airport, according to the National Weather Service.

Icy roads caused a vehicle and tow truck to be briefly stuck on train tracks near Elmwood Park, causing delays of roughly 20 to 25 minutes to Metra’s Milwaukee District West line.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation deployed over 300 pieces of snow equipment to help combat the conditions and several Chicago-area districts delayed the start of the school day by two hours.

Temperatures are expected to climb to the upper 30s. AccuWeather says the sun will emerge, and we’ll reach a high of 41.

As expected, the ice led to treacherous conditions on several area roads. The Illinois State Police said in a 12 hour span, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., troopers responded to 38 motorist assists, 78 property damage crashes and nine personal injury crashes.

WBBM traffic reporter Beau Duran says ramps and bridges appear to be the most slick.
