CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Bundle up because the next 48 hours will be bitterly cold.
Most of the Chicago area did not see temperatures at 20 or above and into overnight the temperatures will drop into the single digits. However, the wind is expected to ease up, so the real feel temperature won't change much, according to AccuWeather.
AccuWeather says we’ll bottom out to a low of 5 degrees overnight. Wednesday, it will remain quite cold, with temperatures only hovering in the low 20s.
The area though will begin to thaw out by Thursday, as temps will reach above freezing. Friday, we’ll climb into the 40s, AccuWeather says.
The warm up will be brief. By the weekend, colder air will return, with another round of single digit temps on tap for next week.
In the midst of the bitter cold, the City of Chicago is opening their network of warming centers. The City’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) says more than 190 public facilities are open and functioning as places to get warm. These include participating Chicago Public Library locations, Chicago Park District, Chicago Police Department and City Colleges of Chicago facilities.
OEMC adds that there are six official warming centers: Englewood Community Service Center, Garfield Community Service Center, Martin Luther King Community Service Center, North Area Community Service Center, South Chicago Community Service Center and Trina Davilia Community Service Center.
