CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Concerns that holiday gatherings could lead to an uptick in COVID-19 cases are top of mind for Chicago Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady.
“We're averaging over 600 cases every day that are being diagnosed in Chicago in the laboratory, so this does not include the hundreds or thousands being diagnosed through home tests,” Arwady said. “These are largely people who are sick enough to go into an emergency department into a doctors office.”
She strongly urged Chicagoans to get the updated vaccine, including younger children. Arwady also encouraged people to wear masks at gatherings to help prevent the spread of COVID and other illnesses.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez echoed the sentiment, especially for students during winter break.
“Keep in mind it's not just COVID now; we're also worried about flu and RSV,” Martinez said. “We are seeing record numbers of flu, RSV and other illnesses.”
Both said being up to date on vaccines and wearing masks are the best way to protect ourselves and others. To help make it easier for people to get vaccinated, Arwady said those interested don't even have to leave their home.
“No matter who you are: If you live in the city of Chicago, we will make an appointment and bring vaccines to you,” she said.
That's through the city's "Protect Chicago At Home" program which offers vaccines, boosters and flu shots for anyone who’s at least 6 months old.
