Mayor Lightfoot on Tuesday approved a stronger "Welcoming City" ordinance for Chicago — a move lauded by advocates for immigrants.
Chicago already prohibits city police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities in most cases. The new ordinance makes that prohibition absolute, says sponsoring 35th Ward Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa.
Rosa, a frequent critic of the mayor, praised Lightfoot for signing the measure. She said Chicago has always been a welcoming city — and rightly so, given the many cultures that are part of the landscape.
"That heritage is a source of our greatness," Lightfoot said.
Lightfoot and Rosa said no one should fear deportation if they dial 9-1-1 for help.
