CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It was a big day for the city of Chicago.

It’s not a birthday party without singing and tasty treats, which came in the form of Eli’s Cheesecake and Ida’s Artisan Ice Cream served at Water Tower to celebrate Chicago’s 187th birthday.

“The foot traffic around here is incredible. I haven’t been around here in a couple weeks, and, with the temperatures, you see the people coming out, how beautiful the city is and how friendly everybody is. It really is just a great start to what I think is going to be an incredible summer here in Chicago,” said Dan Gibbons, CEO of the City Club of Chicago.

“You walk around here, you hear languages, you see suburbanites, people are speaking French and Mandarin. It really is great to see that everybody is back. Chicago’s back and this is just a great celebration to elevate that a bit.”

Many strolling by on their lunch breaks admitted they weren’t aware it was the Windy City’s birthday but weren’t complaining about the free cake or shying away from their Chicago pride.

“The chance to come out here, take a break from the office in the middle of the day and see a lot of smiling faces and enthusiasm for the city, it’s just a great reminder of why we live here and why we’re all boosters for the city of Chicago,” said Nicole Benolken, managing director of 360 Chicago.
