CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago City Council will be back at work again tomorrow after a meeting in which the biggest expected votes were intentionally delayed.

It was Mayor Johnson's own allies who delayed the votes Wednesday on both his $1.25 billion borrowing plan for housing and economic development and the $70 million in additional funding he wants for migrant aid.

It appeared the mayor had already had votes to approve the measures, and didn't he deny it.

"Look, we do," Johnson said. "There's a fairly lengthy meeting today. There are individuals that want to opine or articulate and express their hopes and aspirations for this mission, but there are still questions to be asked."

Expect a lot of discussion at Friday's scheduled meeting.

Also delayed was a vote on something the mayor doesn't want. It's a measure that would let the council members, by ward, decide to keep the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system that the mayor canceled.

"As we wean ourselves off of tactics and strategies that have not produced the type of results that people of Chicago are counting on, we extended the contract to give our community partners, the police department, our alders an opportunity to come up and think through other forms of technology and other forms of public safety tactics that we can use to ultimately keep our communities safe," Johnson said.
