(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The respected good-government group known as the Civic Federation is recommending the Chicago City Council be cut in half, an idea that has been revived over the years.

Sarah Wetmore, the Civic Federation’s acting president, says the push to reduce the City Council to 25 members is part of a 65-page report the group prepared.

Wetmore notes Chicago’s council is larger than that of any other U.S. city, save New York, but the Big Apple has a much larger population. She says a smaller council of alderpersons could focus on policy, rather than constituent services.

"There's plenty of other management folks in the city who you could contact if you need something to happen," Wetmore said.

Among other recommendations, the Civic Federation says the city should untangle its finances with Chicago Public Schools before an elected Board of Education is put in place.
