(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Northwest Side woman whose garden-sized Pride flag was stolen from in front of her home this week has found it in a disrespectful place, she says.

Magdalena Garcia says someone vandalized her garden-size Pride flag in front of her home near Elston and Kilpatrick in the North Mayfair neighborhood last Friday.

Her husband put it back up and then, Monday morning, they discovered the flag had been taken.

That afternoon, she says, the couple found the flag when they went into the alley.

“We stepped out of our back gate and opened our own garbage can -- there was the flag,” Garcia says.

Security video has not provided much help, and she says she did not file a police report.

Of the Pride flag vandals, she said, “There’s discomfort and there’s, perhaps, anger and there’s a rejection of the welcome message. That’s clearly what’s behind the action.”

Garcia says she has ordered about 50 hand-held Pride flags and intends to give one to each household on her block, along with a letter explaining what happened.

She says she’s learned others in the North Mayfair community have commented about similar destructive acts as well.
