CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A veteran Chicago firefighter has died from on-duty injuries suffered earlier this month.

Lieutenant Kevin Ward died at Loyola Medical Center, the department announced. Ward, a 27-year member of the CFD, was 59-years-old.

He was critically injured August 11 while battling a house fire at 8336 W. Balmoral Ave., near O’Hare Airport. A “mayday” call was issued that afternoon. According to CFD spokesman Larry Langford on the day of the fire, Ward was among two firefighters found in the basement of the home, but it was unclear if they fell through the floor or walked down there.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Ward is the third Chicago firefighter killed in the line of duty this year. In April, Firefighter Jermaine Pelt and Lieutenant Jan Tchoryk died on consecutive days while battling separate fires.
