CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An extra alarm fire has been brought under control at a Chinatown supermarket, but it presented firefighters with some unique challenges Wednesday morning.

“This is the first time I’ve ever seen a building like this,” said Chicago Fire Department District Chief Michael Spencer.

He said the entire Park to Shop grocery store on 21st and Archer was made of concrete, including the roof.

The Chicago Department of Buildings  was called in to use heavy equipment to poke holes in it, so firefighters could pour water on the fire.

Because of the oppressive heat and humidity, Chief Spencer said the fire was raised to a 2-11 alarm in order to bring in extra fire crews.

“We wanted to have rehab set up, which means that guys are re-hydrating and getting a break, you know, because of the heat, so that we rotate guys in and out,” Spencer said.

Cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
