CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the union that represents Chicago police officers is apologizing for comments he made about Wednesday's melee at the U.S. Capitol Building after national union leaders expressed dissatisfaction with his remarks.

Earlier this week, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President John Catanzara seemed to downplay the violence in Washington by a pro-Trump mob.

He said the crowd was angry because they felt the election was stolen and noted he didn’t think they were as violent as some Black Lives Matter demonstrators in Chicago who have injured police officers here.

In a statement, the head of the national Fraternal Order of Police said Catanzara's comments do not reflect the opinions of the national FOP or its 356,000 members.

Catanzara is now apologizing. In a statement posted to the FOP Lodge 7 website, he said his statements were poorly worded and he would never justify attacks on citizens, democracy or law enforcement.

A Capitol police officer is among 5 people who died in Wednesday’s riot, which stemmed from Trump’s false claims he won the 2020 presidential election and was being robbed of another term.
