(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gustavo Mata looked at the evidence against him and decided to plead guilty rather than fight the charges — racketeering and conspiracy — at trial.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Indiana announced Mata’s sentence on Aug. 30: 420 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.

Federal prosecutors said after Mata joined the Latin Dragon Nation gang in 2009, he then trafficked guns and drugs and shot rival gang members.

He admitted to the fatal shooting of a 49-year-old man whose body was found in a vacant lot on the city’s Southeast Side in 2012.

Prosecutors said Mata is among 19 members of the gang who were charged as part of a federal investigation.

Among the agencies that worked the case: The FBI, Chicago Police Department, Cook County Sheriff's Office, and the Lake County Indiana Sheriff's Office.
