(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hate crimes in Chicago have hit a level not seen in nearly three decades, according to a new report from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University in San Bernardino.
In 2022 there were 192 hate crimes reported to Chicago police — up 84% from 2021, the report found. Researchers said Black and Jewish people were the biggest targets amid wide variations of reporting across different groups.
The jump from 2021 to 2022 in Chicago was bigger than any other large city. San Diego, Phoenix and San Antonio saw a decline.
So far in 2023, Chicago police have recorded 68 hate crimes, but the police department uses a different measurement that researchers did in the report.
Retired Ald. Harry Osterman told the Sun-Times that the upcoming presidential election could bring out more, as hate crimes are often tied to current events.
The Sun-Times Media Wire contributed to this report.
