(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One hundred and fifty-two blue and yellow flags are on display along State Street from Ida B. Wells to Wacker Drive.

They were put up on Wednesday by the Chicago Loop Alliance in honor of Ukrainian Independence Day.

A flag-raising ceremony also took place at Daley Plaza.

Organizers say the goal is to celebrate Ukraine and the perseverance it has shown after Russia’s invasion six months ago.

“The Chicago Loop is a friend and supporter to all of our sister cities, like Kyiv; and during this unimaginably difficult time for Ukraine, we are honored to commemorate their independence along such an iconic thoroughfare in Chicago,” Michael Edwards, president and CEO of Chicago Loop Alliance, said.

The flags will be on display for more than a month. They are also the city's way of welcoming the Kyiv City Ballet of Ukraine, which will make its first-ever appearance at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on Sept. 24 and 25.
