CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Legendary Chicago House music DJ and producer Paul Johnson died Wednesday from COVID-19 complications. He was 50.
Paul Johnson got his start as a DJ as a teenager in the mid-80s and would go on to become a producer and co-founder of the label Dust Traxx. In 1999, he had a hit with “Get Get Down.”
At 50, Johnson was still performing as a double-amputee in a wheelchair, because of a shooting.
In mid-July, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and was admitted to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park. He had been on a ventilator, but as of last week was off it, breathing on his own and improving.
In a statement Wednesday, Johnson’s agents said he died of complications from COVID.
A statement from his agency said, “Initially hospitalized on July 17, Paul Johnson fought up until the very end. His death comes as a shock to family and fans alike.
"Paul’s charismatic spirit made him a friend to many and an inspiration to all. The Johnson Family is devastated, the outpouring of support has been tremendous and for that they are grateful.”
