(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Ark — a social service agency serving the Chicago area's Jewish community — is breaking ground Friday on a $20 million expansion in West Rogers Park.
It was last fall when the Jewish Federation released a 10-year study, saying that 21% of Jewish households in the Chicago area are unable or struggling to make ends meet.
"So we are serving a fraction of those people right now, and we know that we can do more with more resources and a space that allows us to expand our offerings and expand our programs," Adam Parker, director of development, said.
The Ark's expansion will allow the agency to serve about 1,000 more people every year.
The project will include a quadrupling of the food pantry space, with what Ark leaders say will be improved access to nutritious, kosher food.
Parker says they hope to move back in next summer.
