CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday announced plans to create a $1 million reward fund for tips that lead authorities to illegal guns.
The mayor did not explain how the program would work when police receive information about an illegal gun, nor what kinds of checks and balances would be in place.
Details are still being worked out, said Lightfoot. The police department has an existing hotline program.
Lightfoot emphasized residents in some neighborhoods are living in constant fear because of the threat of gun violence. In fact, she said, families are scared to enjoy a nice summer evening outside their homes “for fear that ordinary moments will become the scenes of tragedy.”
The city must try new approaches, the mayor said.
“We’re setting up a structure for people to provide tips, anonymous if you so desire, to point us to the presence of illegal firearms,” Lightfoot said.
The Lightfoot Administration has said illegal gun trafficking is a big priority for police, and federal officials are expected to aid in the effort.
