(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Johnson has said for months that Chicago needs more help from the Biden Administration to deal with the influx of migrants arriving here from Texas and elsewhere.
On Wednesday, he confirmed that he'll deliver that message in person on Thursday in Washington, D.C., with other mayors of major cities.
Johnson and the other mayors signed a letter calling on the federal government to provide more help in dealing with asylum-seekers from Central and South America. They're seeking funds and expedited work permits, among other things.
The latest numbers from the city of Chicago indicate 3,300 migrants are now waiting at police district stations and the city's airports. That’s out of more than 20,000 migrants who have arrived since August 2022.
For months, city leaders have vented about the spiraling humanitarian crisis in Chicago and have faced backlash from some residents who are leery of housing masses of migrants in their communities.
Now that the weather is turning cold, the city is sending warming buses to police stations to help keep migrants warm overnight.
