(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Johnson says he's preparing a trip to the U.S. Southern Border to get a first-hand look at the influx of migrants that have strained city services in Chicago.
The mayor's confirmation of his pending trip comes as the city prepares for as many as 22 new buses of migrants from Texas and other areas that were set to arrive Wednesday.
“We’re going to assess the full situation and that also requires our team to be at the border,” Johnson said Wednesday.
In response to a separate qestion, the mayor said he would not discourage asylum-seekers from coming to Chicago during winter time.
Johnson would not say when his trip might happen, just that it would be soon.
The mayor also confirmed that U.S. Department of Homeland Security teams came into Chicago on Wednesday as part of an attempt to respond to the surge of migrants.
