(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A family member of a Chicago pizza dynasty and director of the Air and Water Show has died.

Rudy Malnati Jr. died Christmas Eve at his Lake Forest home after battling gallbladder cancer for the past five years, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Malnati was the son of Rudy Malnati, Sr., the man who said he created deep dish-style pizza in 1943.

His half-brother, Lou, created Lou Malnati’s, one of Chicago’s most famous Chicago pizza brands.

Rudy Malnati Jr. founded Pizano’s Pizza and Pasta. For three decades, he directed the Chicago and Water Show.

“The Chicago Air and Water Show is his legacy,” his wife, Annette, told the Sun-Times. “He’s the reason that Chicago has that show. He’s always been the one behind the scenes, which is great because he didn’t need to be in the limelight.”

Malnati was 65.
