(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some of Chicago's unsung four-legged heroes are now recognized along the lakefront.

A plaza was unveiled Wednesday for the 11 Chicago police horses and dogs that have been killed in the line of duty. The installation at the Gold Star Families Memorial for fallen officers also pays tribute to all the animals that have served the city.

Sandra Wortham, President of the Executive Board of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, said it's fitting that this plaza is on Chicago's "avenue of heroes" near Soldier Field.

Figures represent a horse being led by a police officer, an officer carrying a police k-9 and another dog looking on.
