CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed felony charges against a Chicago police officer for an on-duty shooting incident that occurred at the Grand Avenue Red Line station last year.

Officer Melvina Bogard and Bernard Butler were arresting Ariel Roman on Feb. 28, 2020 for passing between cars on a moving train. They’re seen on video struggling trying to handcuff the man on the platform.

They first use a taser on the man, but the struggle continues. Roman is staggering toward Bogard, and she shoots him, and then fires a second time as he’s running up an escalator. Officers were then seen providing first aid.

Roman, the man who was shot, survived and filed a federal lawsuit saying he was having an anxiety attack when he was “harassed, chased, tackled, pepper-sprayed, Tasered and shot twice” without justification.

Officer Bogard, 32, is charged with felony aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct after a review of the incident was conducted by the CCSAO Law Enforcement Accountability Division.

Both officers face disciplinary action and were stripped of their police powers.

No charges were announced against Officer Bernard Butler.
