CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating a police shooting this morning that left an officer and a burglary suspect in the hospital.
Superintendent Larry Snelling said officers were responding to a call of a burglary at the Prada store on Oak Street at around 4 a.m. near when two officers encountered a suspect. A group tried to drive an SUV into the Prada store, Snelling said.
"The officers attempted to de-escalate by telling the suspect to drop the gun. He did not," Snelling said. "Shortly thereafter, there was an exchange of gunfire. One of our officers was struck in the leg. He is suffering from a non-life threatening wound."
The suspect is in surgery after being shot in that exchange with the 55-year-old wounded officer and a 29-year-old officer.
The superintendent said police applied tourniquets to their wounded colleague as well as the suspect.
Police recovered two weapons, but they're looking for multiple vehicles for the burglary as well as other suspects.
