CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A suspected car thief is hospitalized after a shooting by Chicago police in West Englewood Sunday afternoon.
Officers were investigating a report of a stolen car near 74th and Hoyne shortly before 3 p.m. when, Interim Superintendent Fred Waller said, they saw a man get out of a Tesla and run off.
“At that time, the subject turned back towards the officer with a weapon in his hand, and the officer discharged his weapon, striking that offender in the leg,” Waller said. “Officers then apprehended that subject and immediately rendered aid to him, wrapping a tourniquet on his leg.”
The suspect, who police said is a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital in good condition as was one officer for observation.
Waller said the officer who fired two to three shots has been placed on administrative duty for 30 days.
Police said they recovered a gun with an extended magazine at the scene.
