CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The controversial head of Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police has won another term in office.
Nearly 7,200 Chicago police officers voted in the election, and 57% chose Catanzara over challenger Detective Robert Bartlett—a 24-year veteran who ran on a platform of rebuilding the FOP’s government relationships and public image while improving transparency.
Catanzara, a die-hard support of former President Donald Trump, maintained a combative relationship with Mayor Lori Lightfoot. He frequently criticized COVID-19 vaccine mandates and downplayed the deadly 2021 Capitol insurrection.
At one point, Catanzara likened Lightfot’s vaccine mandate to Nazis forcing Jews into gas chambers, comments for which he later apologized on the union’s YouTube channel.
The reelected Catanzara will serve as the police union’s head for the next four years.
