Chicago Public Schools cancels classes for Tuesday over frigid temperatures

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As wind chills in Chicago remain well below zero, Chicago Public Schools announced that all classes will be canceled on Tuesday, according to a letter sent to families on Monday.

"Given frigid temperatures predicted for [Tuesday], and a wind chills warning from the National Weather Service that wind chills that could reach minus 30 degrees below zero, it will be unsafe for staff and students to travel to school," the letter read.

CPS officials added that all after-school programming, including athletic practices and games, would be canceled, too.

There will also be no remote learning for students on Tuesday.

Administrators said they expect classes to resume on Wednesday, when Chicago is projected to get some relief from the deep freeze that started over the weekend.

CPS reminded families, students and staff to stay inside and limit unnecessary time outside, wear several layers of warm clothing and to do their best to keep their hands, head, ears and feet warm and dry.

The City of Chicago has opened multiple warming areas, including a 24-hour warming shelter at the lower level of Harold Washington Library.

Dozens of Chicago Park District facilities will also serve as warming centers, and a full list of those locations can be found here.
