CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s fire and police departments will perform a live water rescue demonstration and an active threat response drill on the Chicago River Wednesday, as part of the 2023 National Homeland Security Association Conference (NHSC).

The CFD Air Sea Rescue helicopters, marine units, and CPD SWAT and special functions teams will be taking part in the demo, which will include simulated gunfire and explosions. The operation will begin at noon, with demonstrations on the Chicago River starting at 1 p.m.

Officials said the event will include several  government agencies and other organizations to learn about emerging trends in homeland security and emergency management, as well as the ability to showcase the new equipment and technology available to support their mission.

The 18th annual NHSC began Tuesday, hosted by the City of Chicago and the National Homeland Security Association board for the first time ever in Chicago.

The annual event brings together professionals in Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue, EMS, and Emergency Management.
