School board to renew embattled Chicago school's charters, with conditions

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Board of Education is slated to renew charters for Urban Prep, despite an ongoing lawsuit involving the school. WBBM’s Nancy Harty reports.

Back in July, a Cook County judge ruled the board’s decision not to renew charters for Urban Prep’s campuses in Bronzeville and Englewood violated the city’s moratorium on school closings that runs for another 13 months.

Vice President Elizabeth Todd-Breland explained at the Board of Education’s Agenda Review Committee meeting the order is behind the new plan, “even as it may be contrary to previous actions of the board.”

The renewal comes with 15 conditions to address what Todd-Breland calls “deep concerns” about allegations of sexual and financial misconduct at the all-boys school that has boasted of sending all its seniors to college. The renewal would only cover this school year.
