(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- What do you do if you love hockey — or figure-skating — and you have a big front yard in Ravenswood? Build your own ice rink, naturally.

“My son loves projects, and this, he really wanted to do,” Ine Witteveen says of her son, Mark Witteveen.

He methodically researched how to build a rink and learned you have to use one giant sheet of clear plastic, Ina said.

“And we sprayed water on it and hoped that it was freezing,” she told WBBM Newsradio Tuesday.

WBBM: And it did.

“And it froze. And it melted a little bit. Then it froze again. Now, it’s frozen very good.”

The rink is about 12 feet by 20 feet, with up to 8 inches of ice.

Ine Witteveen says her grandson loves it.

“The neighbor kids could still come over. Everybody wears masks. Nobody else is allowed.”

At night, they light up the rink.

“My grandson, who’s 6, he decided we needed colorful lights on top. So, the posts are in. The colorful lights go on. It’s fun at night, especially.”
