CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For the second year in a row because of COVID-19, Chicago's yearly Race for the Cure event to raise money for breast cancer research will be held virtually.

Susan G. Komen Chicago decided the health risks from the pandemic were too great to hold the event on Oct. 23 along the lakefront as planned.

Instead, Beth Corona, the executive director, said people can participate when and where they want through Komen Chicago's website, Facebook page or a Race for the Cure smartphone app.

"What we've decided to do this year was to stay virtual and create a fun event that is a race where you are event to participate in our Race for the Cure event,” Corona told WBBM Newsradio.

Corona said last year's virtual Race for the Cure was very successful and she expects the same this year. She said even when people can once again gather for the event, there will still be a virtual option to make it easier for those who can't make it to participate.
