(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Church of Scientology is downplaying reports that it may have been heavy-handed during a recent grand opening ceremony for its new Chicago headquarters in Printer’s Row.

Some Columbia College students say they were asked to show identification as they were trying to get to their dorm building last weekend as the Scientology organization held the ribbon-cutting event nearby at 650 S. Clark.

“The Scientology people hired their own security, and then had their own members being security, so they’d stop you and be like, ‘Can you show me your Columbia ID?’” said freshman Charlotte Johnson.

She said this contradicted guidance college officials gave students – that the Scientology organization could not restrict their access to their housing or check IDs.

Columbia College representatives said they planned to meet with the Scientology organization soon and hopes they can be good neighbors.

The Church of Scientology released a statement to WBBM Newsradio saying it had an "epic celebration" for its opening with nearly 2,000 guests and took security measures. The Church of Scientology directed WBBM Newsradio to its website.

The organization, which has counted many celebrities among its members, has generated controversy amid allegations that it is controlling and retaliates against former members. It was founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.
