CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — City of Chicago employees held widespread demonstrations Thursday afternoon over slow moving contract negotiations.

Union members, chanting “Workers rights,” rallied at several worksites across Chicago, including the Harold Washington Library, Department of Public Health — just one block south of City Hall on LaSalle Street.

Toni, from the City Clerk’s Office, pointed out other departments joined her in picketing.

“I see the Department of Planning, Housing, we also see Streets and Sanitation out here,” Tni said. “We have some people from actual Transportation, and I even see a couple people from the Law Department that are union employees.”

The workers are represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

After six months of lagging negotiations, the union said it seeks a contract that recognizes sacrifices made on the front lines throughout the pandemic, wage increases to keep up with inflation and improved workplace safety.

Workers also want better incentives to attract and retain the number of employees they need to “serve every neighborhood.”
