CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Chicago is looking for volunteers to help track urban heat islands next month.

Chicago is one of 18 cities across the U.S. where the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants to collect readings for temperature and humidity.

The agency wants citizen scientists to drive around with sensors on their cars to measure how air flow, trees, humidity, traffic and buildings contribute to temperatures.

The agency said temperatures can be up to 20 degrees higher in areas with lots of asphalt and few trees. Heat-seeking volunteers are expected to work a three-hour shift on what is forecasted to be one of the hottest days and would be paid for gas.
