CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Family of a Chicago woman critically injured in an expressway shooting involving an off-duty police officer is suing the city.
Lizeth Urbina, 24 is in critical condition at Northwestern Hospital. An off-duty police officer allegedly exchanged gunfire with a man in Urbina’s vehicle on the Stevenson Expressway near Archer Avenue last week leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have said it was not clear who fired the round that hit Urbina. Friends and family members gathered at the Illinois State Police District Chicago headquarters in Des Plaines Wednesday demanding video footage of the shooting to be released.
Urbina’s family also filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago and the Chicago police officer involved. The family's lawyer, Richard Dvorak, said based on the officer's account of what happened, the shooting was unjustified.
“(The officer) had a whole host of things he could have done to de-escalate the situation, and instead he escalated it, and the result is a young woman who’s in the ICU right now, fighting for her life,” he told the Chicago Tribune.
