CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Crews will spend the rest of the month removing dangerous metal from the soil of a Southeast Side little league field.

According to the city, it could take three weeks to remove all traces of a type of metal that can cause brain damage from a Southeast Side youth baseball field.

The remediation at the Babe Ruth field at at East 126th Place and South Carondolet Avenue in the Hegewisch neighborhood will start Tuesday and wrap up at the end of the month.

High concentrations of manganese were found in the soil. The Sun-Times reported the city knew about the issue before the EPA publicly disclosed the contamination last summer. While the field was deemed unsafe for children, the state said adults and teens could still play at the field, as long as grass covered the contaminated area.

The Babe Ruth league is for players between 13 and 18.

Last year, the EPA cleaned the soil of another nearby little league field, the Hegewisch Little League field, after lead and arsenic were discovered in the dirt.

The city said residents with questions about the planned cleanup can call 312-747-9884 to get more information.
