Classes Canceled At WIU After Overnight Shooting On Campus; Suspect Remains At Large

Police said the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Kavion Poplous, is armed and should be considered dangerous.

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police are looking for a Western Illinois University student who allegedly shot and wounded a roommate Tuesday night.

The shooting happened at Thompson Hall at Western Illinois University in Macomb. Police say it appears to have stemmed from a dispute with a roommate.

The WIU Public Safety Department said that right after the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m., a fire alarm was pulled and the dorm evacuated. At least for Tuesday night, everyone who lived in that dorm was relocated elsewhere.

The wounded student was taken to a hospital, but later transferred to another. His condition has not been made public.

Police said they’re looking for an 18-year-old student who allegedly pulled the trigger. They said the student, identified as Kavion Poplous, is armed and should be considered dangerous. There is no active shooter situation now at the university, and all classes at Western, both in-person and online, have been canceled Wednesday.
