(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After several weeks of threats from the Trump Administration, federal immigration raids took place in Chicago on Sunday.
Border Czar Tom Homan and the acting U.S. Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, appointed by President Trump, are in town personally overseeing the operations.
The Department of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began conducting “enhanced targeted operations” along with other federal agencies in Chicago following weeks of rumors.
Mayor Brandon Johnson released a statement on Sunday evening, stating that the Chicago Police Department was not involved. He also reminded people of the Know Your Rights resource guide on the City of Chicago website.
Illinois State Senator Graciela Guzmán confirms immigration arrests did happen in her 20th district.
“I've heard of at least one verified detention of a community member and are presently tracking several incidents in our community.”
Alderman Ray Lopez (15th Ward) supports the raids but says he understands the fear in neighborhoods.
“My understanding, and I've heard this directly from Tom Homan himself, is that their focus right now is solely, solely on those individuals that pose dangerous threats to our neighborhoods.”
Alderman Daniel La Spata (1st Ward) told the Sun-Times he was told operations were taking place in Logan Square.
Council members are also responding to the fact TV personality Dr. Phil has been given exclusive access to the raids taking place in Chicago.
Chicago's 2nd Ward Alderman and Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, Brian Hopkins, says he's frustrated with the lack of coordination from U.S. federal authorities who are conducting raids.
“I support the effort to deport dangerous criminals who have committed crimes while they're here as non-citizens, but not this way. If they continue stunts like this, it's counterproductive. Having Dr. Phil here lends a circus environment to this whole thing.”
Alderman Lopez confirms he is also frustrated by a lack of coordination.
“The City of Chicago is not informed or communicating with our federal partners.”
Alderman Andrey Vasquez says Chicago is doing its best.
“The city is doing what it can within the confines of the law to remain a sanctuary city.”
Each alderman said residents need to stay calm.
