Confirmed tornado spotted in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Authorities spotted a confirmed tornado in downstate Champaign this past hour.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was located near Champaign at around 9 a.m., moving northeast at 45 mph toward Thomasboro.

A Tornado Warning was in place for Northeast Champaign County until 9:15 a.m.

The NWS warned of potential damage to mobile homes, roofs, windows and cars. Tree damage was also expected.

Officials calculated the tornado to be near Rantoul at 9:05 a.m. and near Gifford at 9:10 a.m.
