A north suburban congressman wants to create a permanent tribute to the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi is introducing legislation that calls for a bust of the late litigator and Justice in the Capitol Rotunda.

"She would be joining people like Martin Luther King Jr.,  Rosa Parks. She would be joining statues of former Presidents of the United States. It's an august group, but she obviously belongs among them," Krishnamoorthi said Monday.

Since Ginsburg's death on Friday, thousands of people have gathered for vigils at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago and at courthouses across the suburbs.

Ginsburg was an inspiring figure to many young women, who may have been introduced to Ginsburg's life and work through the "Notorious RBG" memes that popped up on social media in the last decade, the congressman says.

Krishnamoorthi added that Ginsburg is inspiring political action through a flood of donations to Democratic candidates in the final days of the general election campaign.

"If people didn't already understand the gravity of this election, I think they do now," he said. "It certainly was exemplified by the support that you saw over the weekend for various candidates for different offices across the country."
