A Chicago congressman says the federal government must come to the rescue of gyms and fitness centers.

U.S. Mike Quigley on Thursday said it's more important than ever to help these businesses because they help people maintain emotional health.

“Clearly, exercise is one of the best tonics for stress and for depression,” he said.

COVID restrictions have already led to nearly 1.5 million lost jobs in the fitness industry, with another 700,000 expected by summer, unless gyms and fitness centers get aid.

His bill would provide $30 billion in aid. Quigley said he's confident it will pass on its own or as part of a larger COVID-19 relief package.
