(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cook County government is touting a decrease in evictions following predictions that there would be a crisis as we emerged from the worst of the pandemic.

In the thick of the pandemic there was an eviction moratorium. Many people weren’t working or paying rent, many because they couldn’t and some because they could get away with it. But there were predictions of a coming “tsunami of evictions,” noted County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, once the ban was lifted.

It hasn’t materialized. The dire warning prompted Cook County and other government bodies to put together assistance programs for both renters and landlords.

Now, the county reports that over the past six months there have been fewer than half as many evictions compared to the six months at the end of 2019 and the start of 2020.

In the six months leading up to the start of the pandemic, 25% of eviction filings, or about 3,300 resulted in court orders to carry them out.

In the same period in the past six months fewer than 10% or about 1,200 were carried out.
