CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago police officer is set to appear in court next week for the first time on battery charges -- stemming from an encounter with a teenage boy outside an elementary school on the South Side.

Prosecutors have filed charges against 55-year-old Craig Lancaster in connection with last May's incident.

Video of the scene appears to show Lancaster grabbing the 14-year-old boy by his throat as he walked into Gresham Elementary School.

Jordan Marsh is the attorney for the family of the teenager.

"Situations like this really disrupt the relationship between officers and the communities they're sworn to serve," he told CBS 2.

Lancaster's attorney says the officer was dealing with a subject who had been threatening others.
