Suburban coroner using crowdfunding to identify woman whose skull was pulled from wall in 1978

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Kane County Coroner is taking a somewhat unusual approach to attempting to solve a cold case.

Coroner Rob Russell is trying to determine the identity of someone whose skull was found more than 45 years ago.

“Back in 1978, one of the residents of Batavia was renovating their house, and when they opened up one of the walls they discovered the skull,” he said.

It was determined that the skull had been in the wall for decades.

It’s that of a woman in her mid-twenties, according to the Northern Illinois University Anthropology Department.

Now, with advancements in technology, the coroner is looking to cover the $7,500 cost for a private lab to generate a DNA profile.

“That way, it kind of allows people to be part of the solution as opposed to just placing the burden alone on the Batavia Police or basically us, the coroner’s office, and I just feel that it was more appropriate,” he said.

The money is being raised on DNA Solves.
