(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Police Department is proposing to change its policy for officers having positive interactions with the community and the public will have the next two weeks to weigh in with their thoughts on the proposal.
The Police Department has taken fire for its current policy in which officers can report to dispatchers they had had positive community interactions, but details like location and which officers had had that interaction could be left out.
Now…the department has a new proposal for developing trust in the community. They include having officers get out of their squads for brief, spontaneous face-to-face conversations with people. Maybe to carry someone’s groceries or to give someone directions if they appear lost. They are NOT to be used to develop information for making an arrest of some kind.
