CPD officer, sister avoid jail time for participating in Jan. 6 Capitol riot

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Months after being convicted of several misdemeanors for storming the U.S. Capitol in 2021, a Chicago Police officer has been given his sentence.

Karol Chwiesiuk as well as his sister, who also participated in the riots will avoid jail time. Both of them have been sentenced to three months of home detention along with three years of probation, community service time and $500 in restitution.

The day before the January 6 riot, prosecutors say the two drove a rental car to Washington D.C. Text messages presented in court showed the two were "looking for fellow patriots" to build a Fort Trump.

Prosecutors said Chwiesiuk took several photos of himself during the riots all while wearing a Chicago Police hoodie and texted friends about the incident afterwards calling it "epic".

He was charged in June of 2021. Then Mayor Lori Lightfoot called Chwiesiuk's exactions "a total disgrace". He's listed as being on unpaid leave with CPD.
